Unless we can think of Nature as being a source of value, and not a mere resource upon which we project our interests, we will be unable to believe in the importance of limits to our technological remaking of Nature.

About audio file formats

Audio files are currently offered in two downloadable formats, MP3 and FLAC, in addition to a physical CD. The MP3’s, which will be familiar to most users, are encoded in 320kbps CBR for superior compressed audio quality. The FLAC format, Free Lossless Audio Compression, offers audio quality that is virtually identical to the CD master at nearly 1/2 the file size. For more on FLAC, visit the FLAC website.

Recording technology

Each recordist uses his/her own setup to achieve a particular effect. The proprietors of SciFy use Sennheiser microphones in an M/S stereo configuration, recorded to 24bit/48KHz WAV files. Recordings are processed to remove any unwanted noise, usually with some light spectral editing and a lowpass filter for background traffic and airplanes. They are then downsampled to 16bit/44.1KHz for the CD master. The FLAC and MP3 files are made from the CD master.
